The amazing podcast series out of Saskatchewan, called SASKSCAPES, has developed a great audience guided along by host-with-the-most Kevin Power. He interviewed me for episode 70 of his series. You can listen to our conversation by CLICKING HERE.
(from the host) “SaskScapes turns 70 and what better way to celebrate than with the man who has provided the theme music for the podcast since episode one. Saskatchewan born singer/songwriter Jeffery Straker has established himself as one of the most successful (and busiest) artists this province has produced, and has gone on to international acclaim. Kevin Power joins Jeffery in a conversation that is more fun than two people ought to have in a podcast! And, it’s another “6 degrees” moment as Jeffery reveals his musical lineage which connects him to Beethoven and Chopin”.
I’m looking forward to a BIG upcoming show on Nov 20 when I’ll once again get to play my music with an orchestra. This special show is with the Regina Symphony Chamber Players and takes place in the beautiful Casino Regina Show Lounge. The musicians of this chamber orchestra are incredible and playing with them is such a treat. 16 of my songs have been arranged for orchestra for this show including songs from my latest album and I can’t wait to share them. This room seats about 700 people and tickets have been moving really fast – it’s on track to sell out. So if you’re interested, be sure to grab a ticket soon. CLICK HERE TO GO TO TICKETING WEBSITE I look forward to seeing you there. AND, if you’re not in Saskatchewan but have a local orchestra you’re connected to in your city, do please tell them about this show. I’d love to perform it in other parts of the country too.
I’m delighted to be part of the line-up of amazing singers interpreting the songs of Simon & Garfunkel Nov 3-4-5 in Toronto. The shows take place at beautiful Koerner Hall on Bloor Street, at the Royal Conservatory of Music. “Uncovered” is produced by the Acting Up Stage company. They invited me for last year’s edition (the songs of Elton John and Billy Joel) and I’m excited to be back this year. Tickets are available at this LINK
I spent 4 days in late September shooting a new music video for my song “I wanna go back there” from my latest album ‘North Star Falling’. The shoot was up in the faaaaaaar north of Saskatchewan on Reindeer Lake. We stayed at Nordic Lodge – well known from the reality TV show of the same name that is shot there. My music video shoot will feature in an episode of Nordic Lodge as well which is pretty cool! Working with directors Chris Triffo & Steve Allen (+ an amazing crew) we got some incredible shots including an EPIC shot of me playing an old upright piano out in the MIDDLE OF A LAKE! It’s attached as a sneak peek – I still can’t believe we managed that. More to come on this, including the release date.
I attended my elementary and high school years at Punnichy High School, in the Horizon School Division in Saskatchewan (Canada). A few weeks ago, in late August, they inducted me into their “Wall of Fame” in the ‘fine arts’ category. It was a real honour to be able to be there in person for the ceremony, and to address the 1000 teachers and staff who were on hand. They also served some great snacks and my hollow leg was happy. I took all of my music lessons from piano teachers outside the school system since small town schools rarely have music programs built-in. But within the school what I did have were some amazing teachers, who were incredibly motivating and somehow led me to believe that I could do whatever it was, that I set my mind to. Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong. But it’s sure fun trying and I love working full time in the Canadian music industry. Thank-you to all my teachers and thank-you to the Horizon School Division!
I had one heck of a good time taking part in the Regina Folk Festival this past weekend. It was great performing with and meeting so many new musicians, meeting new people around the festival site and getting caught up in the magic of all that music & joy in the air! Just amazing. I have a series of small house concerts over the next few wks and look forward to sharing my songs with new folks. (Thanks to the kind gal who sent me this pic of our mainstage performance on the Sat night of the festival)
We had a great time touring in beautiful British Columbia over the last few wks. The shows
& audiences were great and I got to visit some spots I’ve long wanted to see: TOFINO & GIBSONS LANDING! Coming up we have 2 shows just outside Saskatoon Wed + Thurs this week at Solar Gardens (dinner + show) as well as some private shows around the prairies. I’m playing the Borealis Festival in Prince Albert SK Aug 2 and the Regina Folk Fest Aug 7-8-9. Big thanks goes out to Creative Saskatchewan for supporting these recent tour dates.
After a nice 10 day break to catch my breath, I’m starting back into a run of shows in Canada. July 12 I’m performing a private show in the Athlete’s Village of the PanAm games in Toronto. I head out to the west coast of BC for shows on Vancouver Island in Port Alberni (July 17), Parksville (July 18), & Victoria (July 19). Then off to Vancouver (July 22) & Abbotsford (July 24). We also have 2 nights near Saskatoon SK (July 29 + 30). Early August I’m at the Borealis Festival (Aug 2) and then the Regina Folk Festival (Aug 7-8-9). Come and say hi if you’re able to make it to a show! cheers js
I wanted to write a BIG heartfelt thanks from me to you!—to everyone who checked out a show over the last 3 months while I toured across Canada & into the USA. Thanks to everyone who ordered a CD, bought some music on iTunes or supported what I do in any way: it means a LOT. My recent shows across the maritimes, into Indianapolis Indiana (photo), and then Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada have been great and audiences have been so appreciative. I feel so revved up about touring this new album of mine. After a few private shows in Toronto over the next few weeks, I’ll head out to the West Coast mid-July. Check the calendar on this site to see if I’ll be performing close to you (Vancouver, Abbotsford, Port Alberni, Parksville, Victoria). cheers! Jeffery
I’m looking forward to the upcoming shows in Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. Last time I was on the east coast, when I wasn’t making music I was eating seafood – so. much. seafood. Glorious stuff! I’m looking forward to a repeat of that. If you’re in the maritimes I hope to see you at a show: June 5-Antigonish NS (with Jenny MacDonald), June 6-Hunter River PEI (with Jenny MacDonald & Brian Dunn), June 7-Fredericton NB, June 10-Halifax NS (with Jenny MacDonald). Details and ticketing are on the UPCOMING SHOWS PAGE of this site. I took the attached photo when on tour in Ottawa last week (did a show there with Glenn Nuotio). I stumbled upon 1000 people doing yoga on parliament hill – pretty cool!!
