International Songwriting Competition

My song: “Pickin Lightnin” was short-listed in the Pop/Top 40 category in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition. It didn’t make the finals (boo-hoo) but it was great to find out that it made it as far as it did.

I’m back from the US tour with Ben Schaefer - had an excellent time in New York, Boston and New Jersey! Met so many great people along the way, and it was a pleasure performing the 2 wks with Ben (and Sandy in NYC too!) Thanks to everyone who came out and listened along the way - your support was wonderful for this itinerant CANNUCK. Here’s a snippet from a review received after one of the New York City shows: “Straker packs an impressive range into his delivery with his showtunes- and blues-influenced style. Armed with his piano, he could hold his own against a wild pack of attacking cabaret performers armed with broken martini glasses”….. (Jed Ryan) If you want to know what that means exactly - you’d better come to an upcoming show!

I’ve posted 3 new demos on-line at:
I wrote these new tunes while in Toronto in Dec/Jan. The piano and vocals were recorded in my bedroom and drums were recorded by the gargantuanly talented Flavio Monopoli (!) at Trubble Clef Music, Toronto.
